Catawba Tops Lady Saints at Southeast Challenge

MORROW, GA – The North Georgia women's basketball team fell short in their bid to go undefeated at the Clayton State's Chick-Fila-A  Southeast Region Challenge, falling 63-48 at the hands of Catawba College at the Athletics and Fitness Center.

The Lady Saints go 1-1 to open the season at the Chick-Fila-A  Southeast Region Challenge, while Catawba improves to .500 on the year at 1-1 overall after falling to Clayton State to open the season.

The Indians jumped out to an eight-point lead just four minutes into the contest, but North Georgia rallied and went on a 12-2 run, capped by a Tiffany Marlow three-pointer at the 13:08 mark to give the Lady Saints their first lead of the game at 14-12.

After the first tie of the game with 12 minutes remaining in the opening half, Catawba regained the lead with under 10 minutes to play in the first period and cruised to a seven-point halftime lead thanks to buzzer beater by Taylor May with just one second remaining in the half, giving the Indians a 37-30 lead at the break.

Catawba took their first double-digit lead of the game with 12:51 remaining in the second half as Lauren Lewis knocked down a three-pointer to give the Indians a 12-point advantage at 48-36.

The Indians extended their lead to as many as 19 with 2:23 remaining before settling for a 15-point victory. North Georgia's Brooke Garmon hit a three-pointer at the end of regulation, but the bucket was not enough to propel the Lady Saints who drop their first game of the season.

Janyce Ealey was the only North Georgia player in double figures, finishing with 15 points on 6-7 shooting from the free throw line, while Jessica Howard tallied seven points, and freshman Jessica Trice contributed seven points on as many rebounds.

Milica Ivanovic scored a game-high 17 points on 8-15 shooting, while Dana Hicks had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the game's only double-double.

The Lady Saints return to action next Monday evening, traveling to Young Harris College to battle the Lions. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the YHC Recreation Center.
