Florida Southern Downs Saint Women 57-49 in Eckerd Thanksgiving Classic
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The North Georgia College & State University women's basketball team began a stretch of seven road games Friday afternoon with a 57-49 loss to Florida Southern College in the Eckerd Thanksgiving Classic.
Despite leading for much of the early going of the first half of play, the Saints (1-2) were only able to manage a 30.5% (18-59) shooting performance from the field while the Moccasins (3-0) hit on 39.3% (22-56) of their attempts. Part of North Georgia's problems included a 20% (4-20) performance from three-point range but the Saints were also unable to win the battle off the glass as Florida Southern out-rebounded North Georgia 38-32.
The Mocs received 21 of their 57 points from players coming off the bench, while the Saints' bench chipped in just nine points.
Junior forward Jaymee Carnes led all scorers with 18 points off a 7-16 shooting performance. She also added seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals to lead North Georgia along with Stephanie Huffman who added 10 points and seven boards.
Florida Southern was led in scoring by Morgan Lamberg's 17 points off an extremely efficient 7-10 shooting performance as she matched Carnes with seven rebounds and a pair of blocks.
Kirstin McIntyre had 10 points for the Mocs, but went just 4-12 from the field.
North Georgia was able to control the first half of play, easing out to an eight-point lead with just over four minutes remaining in the opening stanza when Carnes hit two free throws to go up 23-15. But the Mocs began their resurgence with nine unanswered points to close out the half, taking a 24-23 lead into the locker room.
From there, North Georgia was never able to regain the lead despite keeping within five points of Florida Southern for much of the second half.
North Georgia will next play the tournament host, Eckerd College, tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.
