GAINESVILLE, Georgia – (UNGAthletics.com) –
Representatives of the University of North Georgia men's and women's basketball teams recently taught basketball fundamental skills to the Physical Education classes as Sardis Enrichment School in northern Hall County.

Four men's basketball players (Mike Varrichione, Brian Cole, Caleb Dupree, Taylor Metzger) and two women's basketball players (Jaymee Carnes and Helena Pouengue) were part of the community service initiative.

"This was a great chance for our teams to help give back to the young kids at Sardis Elementary," stated men's basketball head coach Chris Faulkner. "Teaching the game of basketball to young kids is always beneficial but when our players get the chance to become involved in the community it takes on increased meaning."

Sardis Enrichment School is Hall County's newest charter school and is one of three charter schools in the Hall County school system where flexibility from state laws allow teachers to create a more engaging learning environment. The school features cluster groups on Friday afternoons that match students' interests with teachers' passions. Sardis is the first school in the Hall system to build most of its instructional approach around students' interests, as outlined in the Schoolwide Enrichment Model.

The Department of Athletics at the University of North Georgia strives to enrich student-athletes with academic knowledge, refined athletic ability, and caring and respect for the surrounding communities.
