North Georgia improves to 2-0 on the young
season
Dahlonega, GA – North Georgia College
& State University trailed by a goal at the half, but rallied
to pull off a 2-1 overtime win against the University of North
Alabama Sunday evening at the Soccer Complex. Katie Turner notched
both goals for the Lady Saints, including the game-ending
dagger.
North Georgia (2-0-0) and North Alabama (1-1-0) remained scoreless
in the first half until the Lions jumped on the scoreboard with a
Tassia Augusto goal in the 34th minute on an assist by Meghan
Brown.
North Georgia dominated the first half with 11 shots to the Lions
just one shot, which resulted in the only goal of the
half.
The Lady Saints found themselves down a goal with just less than
20 minutes remaining in the match, but freshman Laura Lane chased
down a cross and drew the goalkeeper from the box, resulting in a
red card on goalkeeper Alex Mclay and a penalty kick for North
Georgia.
Katie Turner was selected to take the penalty kick, and promptly
sent the ball to the back of the net, tying the match 1-1.
North Georgia had a pair of scoring opportunities late in
regulation, but sent shots high and wide left, resulting in a tie
game at the end of regulation.
The Lady Saints came out firing in overtime, recording three shots
in the first six minutes, but sending them all wide of the goal.
Turner finally came through in the 98th minute, sending a liner
just out of reach of the Lion's goalkeeper to send the Soccer
Complex into celebration mode with a 2-1 overtime victory.
North Georgia outshot North Alabama 22-4, and Lion’s
goalkeeper McLay recorded eight saves in 72 minutes before leaving
with a red card.
The Lady Saints return to action against West Georgia on Friday,
September 5, at the North Georgia Soccer Complex with kickoff
scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
