DAHLONEGA, GA
– The North Georgia women’s soccer team was at it again
Tuesday afternoon, continuing a trend of late heroics as Lauren
Schenk scored the game’s only goal with 82 seconds remaining
in the contest as the Lady Saints defeated Belmont Abbey 1-0 in
non-conference action.
North Georgia improves to 4-0-1 overall, the program’s best
start in school history, having received votes in each of the last
two NSCAA Division II National Polls. In the Lady Saints’
10-year history, a 4-1 start in 2007 was the best mark before North
Georgia scrambled in it’s 2009 season opener to force a tie
before reeling off four straight victories. Belmont Abbey
falls back to the .500 mark at 2-2 on the season.
With the match scoreless and what seemed destined for an extra
period, the Lady Saints struck magic once again late, this time in
the 89th minute as Brittany Bauschka sent a cross to the center of
the box, where Schenk played the ball off of one bounce and fired
home the winner past Belmont Abbey goalkeeper Kelsey Lovell for the
only goal of the game.
North Georgia controlled the game statistically, outshooting the
Abbey 11-5, while holding a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Jessica English recorded her second shutout of the season,
notching three saves in the blanking of the Abbey to stay
undefeated.
North Georgia found out Tuesday afternoon they remained fourth in
the latest Southeast Regional Poll, and received votes in the
National Poll for the second straight week, keeping pace with the
rest of the nation with the 1-0 victory.
The Lady Saints return to action on Saturday evening, playing
their sixth straight road game to start the season, this time at
new Peach Belt Conference rival the University of Montevallo. The
primetime kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m at Varsity Field in
Montevallo, Alabama. North Georgia will look to stay undefeated on
the season, as one of just two league members to remain unbeaten.
