TAMPA, FL – North Georgia College & State University remained undefeated Sunday afternoon, breaking into the win column with a 3-2 victory over Barry University in non-conference action.
In just the second meeting between the two schools, North Georgia evened the all-time series, improving to 1-0-1 on the year, while Barry University drops their season opener and fall to 0-1 on the season.
North Georgia scored the opening goal of the game, striking in the 23rd minute as Kelsey Martin notched her first collegiate goal, taking a pass from Kelly Penston for a 1-0 lead. The Bucs responded just three minutes later as Lainie Ferring lifted a corner kick to Steph Day who sent the ball home to even the contest.
It was all North Georgia in the second half as 12 minutes into the second period Casey Smith put the Lady Saints in front for good, recording an unassisted goal to make it a 2-1 game. Danielle Brannan followed less then two minutes later, scoring her first goal of the season to give North Georgia their first two-goal lead of the season.
Allie Llaneras trimmed the Lady Saints’ lead to one with a goal in the 69th minute off a pass from Haley Struthers, but North Georgia held on over the final 20 minutes to pick up their first victory of the season and hand the Bucs their first loss of the 2009 campaign.
North Georgia had an 8-4 lead in shots at halftime, before ending the game with a 14-9 advantage. Jessica English went the distance in goal, allowing two goals and stopping one shot, while Barry’s Emily Brunschweiler allowed all three North Georgia goals while recording four saves.
The Lady Saints will play the final contest of a three-game road trip to start the season as they travel to the University of West Georgia to take on the Wolves next Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. The two teams battled to a double overtime scoreless tie last season in Dahlonega, as North Georgia is 1-0-1 all-time against their in-state rival.
