MILLEDGEVILLE, GA
– The North Georgia women’s soccer team avoided their
fourth straight loss on Saturday afternoon, battling the Bobcats of
Georgia College to a double-overtime 1-1 tie in Peach Belt
Conference action.
The Lady Saints move to 4-3-2 overall on the season, and 1-2-1 in
the Peach Belt Conference, while the Bobcats play to their second
straight tie, moving to 5-4-3 overall and 1-0-2 in the league.
In a game that was as even statistically as it was on the field,
both teams played to a scoreless intermission as each squad
recorded seven shots, while North Georgia was awarded three corner
kicks to the Bobcats four in the first period.
The second half proved to be a different story however, as defense
took a backseat for the first 11 minutes. GCSU struck first as Kara
Teresi broke away from the North Georgia defense and took a pass
from Lyric Burnett to place a shot past Lady Saints’
goalkeeper Kirsten Ross and give the Bobcats a 1-0 advantage.
The Lady Saints showed resolve by battling back just nine minutes
later, using the freshman duo of Leanne South and Kelsey Martin to
tie the game 1-1 at the 56:36 mark. Martin provided the assist on
the equalizer, while South recorded her first collegiate goal to
knot the score at a goal apiece.
The goalkeepers would be the story the rest of the way as Ross and
Mary Rob Plunkett would keep the game scoreless in both overtimes
to force the tie after 110 minutes of action. Plunkett recorded six
saves for the Bobcats, while Ross shined in her first start of the
year for North Georgia, notching seven saves in the contest.
The final shot total favored the Bobcats by five, as Georgia
College outshot the Lady Saints 17-12, while the home team also
held the final edge in corner kicks at 6-4.
North Georgia returns to action on Monday afternoon, hosting
Anderson University at 3:00 p.m., a game that was rescheduled from
a washout earlier in the season. The Lady Saints will look to get
in the win column for the first time since September 15.
