DAHLONEGA, GA – North Georgia’s Casey Smith
has been named the Peach Belt Conference Defensive Player of the
Week announced this afternoon by the league office.
Casey Smith led the Lady Saints to a 1-0-1 record in the opening
weekend, scoring a pair of goals and adding an assist.
As a defender, the junior led North Georgia back in the final 15
minutes against the 24th-ranked Tampa Spartans in the season
opener, scoring on a free kick before assisting the game-tying goal
with under 10 minute to play to force a 2-2 tie.
Smith then came out against Barry University and gave the Lady
Saints the lead for good in the second half with an unassisted goal
that proved to be the difference in a 3-2 victory over the Bucs.
Smith continued her streak of hot starts in 2009, having scored a
goal in the season opener in each of her three seasons for North
Georgia.
This marks the second straight year the Stockbridge, Ga., native
captured a Peach Belt Conference weekly honor the first week of the
season after being named the Offensive Player of the Week last
season following a hat trick in the first game of the year.
The Lady Saints will play the final contest of a three-game road
trip to start the season as they travel to the University of West
Georgia to take on the Wolves next Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
The two teams battled to a double overtime scoreless tie last
season in Dahlonega, as North Georgia is 1-0-1 all-time against
their in-state rival.
