Lady Saints Dismantle Anderson, Blank Trojans 5-0
DAHLONEGA, GA
– The North Georgia College & State University
women’s soccer team exploded offensively Monday afternoon at
the Soccer Complex, blanking Anderson University 5-0 in the Lady
Saints’ final non-conference game of the season.
North Georgia picked up their first victory in 20 days, improving
to 5-3-2 overall, while Anderson fell to 3-7 on the season.
The Lady Saints had little trouble finding the back of the net as
Kelly Martin got the scoring parade started in the 7th minute as
Casey Smith served a corner kick into that box that found the head
of Martin who sent it home for a 1-0 lead.
Kelsey Martin would add to the lead 30 minutes later in the 37th
minute as Laura Lane found Martin in stride and the freshman lined
a shot inside the left post to give North Georgia a 2-0 lead
heading into intermission.
Danielle Brannan stole the show in the second half as the sophomore
tallied goals in the 49th and 51st minutes to give the Lady Saints
a 4-0 lead. Smith was credited with an assist on the first goal,
while Penston setup Brannan for her second score of the game.
Penston put the finishing touches on the scoring barrage from North
Georgia in the 64th minute as Sara Kate Rogers found a slashing
Penston in the box who sent a diving header in the back of the net
to give the Lady Saints a 5-0 victory.
North Georgia recorded a season-high 26 shots on goal, while
Anderson managed just two, both coming in the second half. The Lady
Saints were awarded 10 corner kicks in the game to the Trojans one,
which game in the final minute of the contest.
Anderson goalkeeper Alyssa Stephens went the distance for the
Trojans, allowing all five goals, while recording 10 saves in the
game. Kirsten Ross notched her first shutout in goal for North
Georgia, picking up one save in all 90 minutes of action.
With the Lady Saints’ final non-conference game of the year
in the books, the squad will now turn their attention to an
in-state Peach Belt Conference battle with Georgia Southwestern on
October 14, as North Georgia welcomes the Hurricanes to town for a
1:00 p.m. kickoff.
