GREENWOOD, SC – With time running down in
regulation, North Georgia's Kelsey Martin broke
a 1-1 tie, finding the back of the net with 23 seconds remaining to
give the Lady Saints a 2-1 victory over Lander University in Peach
Belt Conference action.
North Georgia wins their fifth straight game, improving to 6-1
overall on the year and a perfect 3-0 in Peach Belt Conference
play, while Lander's tough schedule to open the year sends the
Bearcats to 5-4 overall and 0-3 in the league.
The Lady Saints took the early lead as Lauren Schenk broke
free and tallied her first goal of the season in the 9th minute to
give North Georgia a 1-0 advantage.
Lander connected on the equalizer in the 65th minute as North
Georgia committed a foul in the box, sending Christin Moss to take
the penalty kick and the senior sent it home to knot the score at a
goal apiece.
The score would be tied until the waning moments when Kelsey
Martin connected on her fourth goal of the year to send North
Georgia to the Peach Belt Conference victory in dramatic
fashion.
Kirsten
Ross tallied her first start of the year and made the most of
it, recording six saves and picking up her fist victory of the
season in goal.
Lander held a 13-11 advantage in shots, while the Lady Saints had
eight corner kicks to seven for the Bearcats.
North Georgia will have three days off before returning to action
on Wednesday evening another Peach Belt Conference contest against
Clayton State. Kickoff against the Lakers is set for 5:00 p.m. at
the Soccer Complex.
