DAHLONEGA, GA – The North Georgia women's
soccer team continued to roll over their opponents on Wednesday
evening, scoring a pair of goals in each half to run past in-state
rival Clayton State University 4-1 in Peach Belt Conference
North Georgia improves to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the Peach Belt Conference with their 6th straight victory, while Clayton State falls to 3-4 on the year and 1-2 in the league.
The headline of the night belonged to senior All-American Casey Smith who tallied a trio of assists to capture the Peach Belt Conference's all-time record for assists in a career with 37. She tied the all-time mark in the 21st minute, and moved atop the record books in the 36th minute with her second assists of the game.
The Lady Saints tallied the game's first goal in the 21st minute as Smith sent a corner into the box, finding Samantha Abrahart who headed it home to give North Georgia a 1-0 lead.
Whitley Dover added to the lead just 15 minutes later, taking a pass from Smith and dribbling in the box for an open look on goal, her first score of the season to give North Georgia a 2-0 advantage, a lead that held true heading to intermission.
Following halftime, the Lakers finally put some pressure on the Lady Saints as Omotayo Adeshigbin took a pass from Caitlin Clark in the box and fired home her third goal of the season, cutting the North Georgia lead to 2-1 at the 60:10 mark.
The Lady Saints responded in the 65th minute however, as Smith lined up for another corner, found her favorite target, and Abrahart delivered her second goal of the game and league-leading ninth score of the season with a header inside the right post.
Emily Bowen capped the scoring in the 72nd minute with her fourth goal of the year as Abrahart and Brittany Bauschka tallied the assist on the play. The score gave North Georgia a 4-1 lead and another Peach Belt Conference victory.
North Georgia dominated every facet of the game, firing 17 shots to just three for Clayton State, while the Lady Saints tallied six corners to three for the Lakers.
Kirsten Ross picked up her second straight victory in goal, recording one save in 45:00 minutes of action, while Jessica English saw action in goal during the second half, allowing the only Laker goal.
North Georgia returns to action over the weekend, traveling to the Columbus State University to battle Florida Tech on Friday afternoon and 15th-ranked Florida Southern on Sunday morning in key non-conference matchups.
