AUGUSTA, GA -- The Peach Belt Conference announced the women's soccer All-Academic team from the conference office in Augusta, Ga., on Wednesday afternoon and North Georgia placed a pair on the team, while three others were honorable mentions.
Kelly Martin has played and started in all 18 games for the Lady Saints at center back in 2010, logging 1550 minutes and playing in all 90 minutes in 12 of those contest. She has two goals, both coming against conference opponents, and leads a defense that has recorded five shutouts and outscored opponents 48-20.
Natalie Douglass led the North Georgia midfield with five goals two assists for 12 total points. She played and started in all 18 games for the Lady Saints and logged 1390 minutes with 25 shots and two game-winning goals. She had game-winning goals over Georgia College and Flagler College, and recorded five points in a 6-0 victory over Young Harris. The Lawrenceville, Ga., native scored the game's first goal in North Georgia's first-ever PBC Tournament victory on November 2, sending a header to the back of the net in the first half as the Lady Saints went on to advance in penalty kicks.
Brittany Bauschka, Danielle Brannan, and Lauren Schenk were also recognized as three of the 30 honorable mentions around the conference. The Lady Saints are one of four teams remaining in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament as North Georgia looks to qualify for their first-ever NCAA Tournament.
The all-academic team is part of a season-long program recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of PBC student-athletes in the classroom as well as on the field. To be eligible for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must 1) participate in at least half of his/her team's events and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and 3) completed at least one full academic year at his or her current institution. The Peach Belt Conference Sports Information Directors oversee and select the teams.
Founded in 1991, the Peach Belt Conference is home to 29 NCAA Division II National Championships. 13 member institutions in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Alabama compete in 13 championship sports. 2009-10 members are Augusta State University, Armstrong Atlantic State University, Clayton State University, Columbus State University, Flagler College, Francis Marion University, Georgia College & State University, Georgia Southwestern State University, Lander University, University of Montevallo, North Georgia College & State University, University of North Carolina at Pembroke and the University of South Carolina Aiken.
