DAHLONEGA, GA – The Peach Belt Conference has
released the women’s soccer preseason All-Conference team as
Casey Smith and Kelsey Martin were named to the squad voted on by
the league’s head coaches.
A total of 12 members were named to the 2010 team due to a tie for
the final spot at defender. Columbus State and GCSU each had three
players named to the team while North Georgia and Armstrong
Atlantic State had two each. Clayton State and UNC Pembroke
also had one player on the squad.
Casey Smith’s selection to the team comes as no surprise as
the senior is one year removed from receiving All-American honors.
Aside from her First-Team Peach Belt All-Conference selection last
season, the Stockbridge, Ga., native was named First-Team
All-Southeast Region by the National Soccer Coaches of America, and
First-Team All-Region by Daktronics.
She was named the PBC Defensive Player of the Week on four
different occasions last season, more than any other player in the
league as the standout scored six goals and tallied nine assists
for 21 total points.
Kelsey Martin picks up her first preseason All-Conference award
after being named the Peach Belt Conference’s Freshman of the
Year, the first player in North Georgia program history to earn the
award.
She led the Lady Saints last season and was tied for seventh in
the PBC with nine goals during the season; she was also tied for
eighth in the league in points. The Dallas, Ga., native had three
game-winning goals, including the lone score in a 1-0 upset of
third-ranked Columbus State. She started in 11 games as a freshman
and played in all 16 for the Lady Saints.
North Georgia has their sights set on their season opener at
Lees-McRae on September 2, in Banner Elk, North Carolina. The Lady
Saints will kick off at 4:00 p.m. in a quest for their first-ever
Peach Belt Conference Regular Season and Tournament Titles and a
birth in the NCAA Tournament.
