DAHLONEGA, GA – The North Georgia women's soccer team opened the season in style on Friday evening, jumping all over the Bobcats of Lees-McRae early and coming away with a 2-0 season-opening victory at the North Georgia Soccer Complex.
The Lady Saints wasted little time getting on the board, as Bobcat goalkeeper Kaitlyn Briggs played a ball out that found the foot of Kelsey Martin who buried her first goal of the season inside the right post. The score in the opening minute paced North Georgia in the first half as they cruised into the intermission with a 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats best scoring chance of the opening period came in the 34th minute when Meagan Thornton drilled a shot that connected with the right post, nearly missing what would have been Lees-McRae's first goal of the season.
The Lady Saints doubled their lead in the 69th minute when Kelsey Martin slid a pass through the box to Danielle Brannan who finished a wide-open look to give North Georgia a 2-0 edge.
With time running down under three minutes, Kelly Penston stood over a free kick just outside the box and drilled the top post, sending the ball back into play for what would be North Georgia's final shot of the day.
Kirsten Ross did her job in goal for the Lady Saints, recording six saves and recording her first shutout of the young season. Briggs tallied four saves, but allowed both North Georgia goals to suffer the loss for the Bobcats.
Brannan and Abby Trevino paced North Georgia with three shots apiece, while Thornton fired three shots of her own for Lees-McRae, with two resulting in saves for Ross.
In a statistic the Lady Saints dominated a year ago, North Georgia managed just one corner in each half, while Lees-McRae tallied a pair in the first half and four more in the second half.
North Georgia will have a day off before traveling to Mount Olive College on Sunday afternoon at Amon Field in Mount Olive, North Carolina. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 p.m. as the Lady Saints look to start the season with a pair of wins.
