HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The 2012-13 regular-season opened Thursday afternoon for the North Georgia College & State women's soccer team. The Saints were on the road for their season-opener and traveled to Huntsville, Ala. where they defeated the Chargers of the University of Alabama-Huntsville 3-0.
Three separate players scored for the Saints in the season-opener spurred late in the first half by senior Melanie Thompson. Thompson netted the season's first goal off an assist by Julianna Luther with just 55 seconds remaining in the opening half.
North Georgia did not take nearly as long to find the back of the net in the second half as junior Caroline Wallace scored an unassisted goal seven and a half minutes into the second stanza. Abby Trevino capped off the scoring for the Saints with her own unassisted goal just nine minutes later.
The Saints kept the pressure on Huntsville's goalie as they took 23 shots compared to the Chargers' four. Iris Gunnarsdottir was forced to make 11 saves as the Saints were relentless in their attack that included 14 shots on goal and five corner shots while Mallary Sayre only had to make one save.
North Georgia will now return home to Dahlonega, where they will host a four-team, four-game tournament featuring the Saints, Belmont Abbey College, Mount Olive College and the University of West Florida on Saturday, Sept. 1 and Monday, Sept. 3.
The Argos of West Florida and the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey kick things off with a 2:00 p.m. contest at North Georgia's soccer field Saturday before the Saints host Mount Olive's Trojans in a 4:30 p.m. non-conference match.
Action in the early-season tournament will resume on Monday, Sept. 3 when West Florida and Mount Olive face off at 11:00 a.m. before North Georgia closes out their home-tourney with a 1:00 p.m. match on the pitch against Belmont Abbey.
Live stats will be available for all four matches over the Labor Day holiday.
