Saints Fall 3-1 to No. 1 Pirates in NCAA Second Round for Second Year in a Row
SAVANNAH, Ga. – For the second season in a row, the North Georgia College & State University women's soccer team's season came to a close at the hands of Armstrong Atlantic State University. This season, the No. 1 Pirates bounced back from a 1-0 deficit to claim a 3-1 win over the Saints on their home field Saturday afternoon in the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Tournament's second round.
It was the third time the two had met this season with Armstrong claiming all three contests by a combined score of 9-5. The Saints end the season with a 15-5-2 record while the nationally-ranked Pirates will take their 19-1-1 record into the NCAA Tournament Third Round next weekend.
In all three contests, the Saints matched up well against the Pirates and were able to score first. Sunday's contest was no different as Kelly Penston gave North Georgia a 1-0 off a feed from Abby Trevino in the 16th minute. It was a lead North Georgia would hold until the 52nd minute.
Morgan Mitchell scored the tying goal for the Pirates just seven minutes into the second half and then the go-ahead score in the 79th minute.
Despite giving up three goals, Mallory Sayre had nine saves between the pipes for the Saints while Morgan Luckie made two for Armstrong.
The Pirates held a 19-12 advantage in shots and a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
