Penston & Taliaferro Honored As NSCAA All-Region Selections
KANSAS CITY, Kansas – (UNGAthletics.com) – University of North Georgia women's soccer players Kelly Penston and Cicely Taliaferro were each honors as selections on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Southeast Region team as announced last week by the national coaches' association. Penston was named a 1st team selection as a forward while Taliaferro garnered 2nd team honors as a midfielder.
Penston was awarded with the Peach Belt Conference's Brine Golden Ball honoring the conference's top goal scorer as the senior's 18 goals set a new UNG single season record. She wrapped up the 2013 season with a hat trick of three goals in the Nighthawks' 5-3 PBC quarterfinal loss at Lander marking her fourth multi-goal performance of the year. She is currently tied for 7th nationally in goals scored after collecting a stretch of ten consecutive games mid-season with a goal scored. She garnered PBC/AstroTurf Player of the Week honors on September 16.
The senior from Suwanee, Ga. was honored earlier this year as a Daktronics All-Region and All-American selection. Her 18 goals ranks in a tie for eight nationally in the final NCAA Division II statistical rankings.
Taliaferro recorded three goals and six assists from her midfielder position. She tallied a pair of scores in the team's 13-0 victory over Georgia Southwestern and had a pair of assists in the Nighthawks' 3-0 win at Montevallo. She was named the PBC/AstroTurf Player of the Week on October 14.
The honor marks the third consecutive season that Penston has earned regional distinction from the NSCAA and the second second straight year that Taliaferro has landed on the ballot.
The duo joined 12 other players in representing the Peach Belt Conference on the three-team honor roll.
UNG wrapped up the 2013 season with a 12-5-1 overall record and 7-3-1 mark in Peach Belt Conference play.
