DAHLONEGA, GA – The North Georgia College & State University women's tennis team welcomed NAIA powerhouse Brenau University to town on Tuesday evening and gave the Golden Tigers all they could handle in a 7-2 loss at the Yahoola Creek Tennis Facility in non-conference action.
The Lady Saints drop their first match of the season, falling to 2-1 on the year, while the 7th-ranked Golden Tigers pick up their first win of the season, improving to 1-1 on the year.
North Georgia had a rough go during doubles action, but the Lady Saints kept it close as Stasa Vujosevic and Laura Chapman dropped an 8-4 decision at No. 1, while Audrey Marlette and Jordan Poole fell 8-2 at No. 2. Juliana Chiang and Matilda fought Eline Nagels and Nelli Martirosyan at No. 3 doubles, but fell 8-4 as Brenau held a 3-0 lead heading into singles action.
North Georgia had plenty to cheer about in singles action as Chapman shined at No. 1, blowing past NAIA All-American Lyn See Choo 6-3, 6-4 to give the Lady Saints their first point of the day.
Vujosevic did her job at No. 2, taking the first set 6-3 over Kate Mazackova, but dropped the second set 4-6, setting up the decisive third set and Vujosevic edged her opponent 10-6 to give North Georgia what would be their final point of the day.
Chiang pushed Hannah Thompson to the brink at No. 3, but fell 7-5, 6-3 as the Golden Tigers held on in the final three singles matches to come away with a 7-2 road victory.
The Lady Saints return to action on Friday, traveling to UNC Pembroke to open Peach Belt Conference play. First serve is set for 12-noon against the Braves.
