Lady Saints Stifle Braves 8-1 in Peach Belt Opener
PEMBROKE, NC – The North Georgia women's tennis team opened up Peach Belt Conference play on Friday afternoon, traveling to UNC Pembroke and taking down the Braves 8-1 at UNCP's Varsity Tennis Courts.
North Georgia rallied from late deficits to capture a pair of key victories in doubles play, and then registered five singles victories in straight sets, to pick up a key Peach Belt Conference victory over UNCP on Friday afternoon at UNCP's Varsity Tennis Courts.
The triumph helped North Georgia (3-1, 1-0 PBC) record its second consecutive series victory against the Braves, (1-3, 0-2) the first time the Layd Saints have accomplished that feat in the history of the seven-match-old series.
The win also helped the Lady Saints rebound from their lone loss of the season on Tuesday against Brenau at home. The result marked the third-straight setback for UNCP since a season-opening 9-0 win over region rival Fayetteville State.
North Georgia's Laura Chapman and Stasa Vujosevic made quick work of Jenna McGary and Hannah Herlocker at No. 1 doubles with an 8-1 ouster, but the visitors found wins in the other two doubles matches to be a bit more difficult. Trailing 6-5 in both remaining doubles bouts, Audrey Marlette and Jordan Poole won the last three games on court No. 2 to take an 8-6 win over UNCP's Mia Winterbottom and Madeline DiNunzio.
Juliana Chiang and Matilda Watson posted a similar comeback at No. 3 doubles, but had to rely on a tiebreaker (9-7) to prevail over Christian Minnick and Maricel Quintero with a 9-8 final.
Marlette's 6-2, 6-2 win over Quintero at No. 4 singles, coupled with Chang's 6-4, 6-4 ouster of Herlocker, would give the team victory to the Saints, but the visitors kept the momentum going with three more individual wins on the day. Chapman defeated McGary 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 on court No. 1, Poole topped Dinunzio 6-4 and 6-4 at No. 5 singles and Vujosevic completed the scoring on the day for the Saints with a 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-7 win over Winterbottom on court No. 2.
Minnick would pick up the lone point of the day for the Braves at No. 6 singles with a straight-sets victory over Watson, 6-4 and 6-2.
North Georgia returns to action on Sunday morning, welcoming Francis Marion to town for another Peach Belt Conference matchup. First serve against the Patriots is set for 11:00 a.m. at the Yahoola Creek Tennis Complex.
