Women's Tennis in Full Swing at ITA Southeast Regional

SUMTER, SC - The North Georgia women's tennis team saw their first action of the fall as they traveled to South Carolina to take part in the 2011 USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional Championships held at the Palmetto Tennis Center.

In the women's Single-A draw, sixth seeded Laura Chapman defeated Anderson's Lauren Trumbull in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Chapman was the lone member of the Lady Saints to compete in the Single-A bracket and she faces Peach Belt foe Julia Graf of Francis Marion in the round of 32.

In the women's Single-B draw, Audrey Marlette, Juliana Moscoso-Chiang, and Maria V Casseres Romero all received first round bye's. Jordan Poole and Nela Handac, the only Lady Saints who saw first round action in the Single-B draw, both lost to conference opponents in straight sets. Poole fell to Augusta State's Roberta Oliveira 6-2, 6-2, while Handac lost to Flagler's Laura Ospina 6-1, 6-1.

In the Round of 32, Marlette faces Samantha Wohlers of Lees-McRae, Moscoso-Chiang battles Lander's Lori Flick, and Casseres V Romero looks to take down Georgia College's Michelle Lingner.

After their first round losses, Poole and Handac moved to the Single-B consolation bracket. Handac received a first round bye in the consolation bracket, while Poole battles Flagler's Gabby Scammacca in a win-or-go-home contest.

In doubles action, Chapman and Moscoso-Chiang coasted past UNC-Pembroke's Ally Johnson and Beverly Vause 8-1, while Handac and Marlette received an opening round bye.

The tandem of Poole and Casseres V Romero fell to Charlotte Dawson and Jane Plevako of Young Harris 8-3.

The ITA Regional Championships, sponsored by the USTA, date back to 1981 and for nearly two decades were also known as the Rolex Regional Championships. The ITA Regional Championships featured the top men's and women's players from each of the ITA's regions. All in all, 8,000 varsity tennis players from 600 schools participated in the USTA/ITA Regional Championships.
