ATLANTA, GA – The North Georgia women's tennis team opened the 2012 season on Thursday afternoon with an impressive 6-3 victory over Clark Atlanta at the CAU Courts.
The Lady Saints won their season opener for the third straight year, while Clark Atlanta looks to rebound from their first loss of the year as they prepare to play four more Peach Belt Conference squads.
North Georgia won two of the three doubles contests and four of six singles matches en route to their first ever victory over the Panthers.
In No. 2 doubles, Audrey Marlette and Jordan Poole defeated Ivory Conley and Kasey Dawson 8-5, while Maria V Casseres Romero and Nela Handac cruised to an 8-2 victory over Vanessa Jean-Baptiste and Brionne Bachus in No. 3 doubles.
In singles action, Natalia Escobar held off the Panther's Munashe Makuni to score a 6-3, 3-6, (11-9) victory in No. 1 singles.
Poole, Romero and Handac all won their singles matches in straight sets to start the season a perfect 2-0.
Poole took down Jean-Baptiste 6-1, 6-4 in No. 4 singles, Romero defeated Dawson 6-1, 6-3 in No. 5 singles and Handac handled Conley 6-2, 6-2.
The Lady Saints return to the courts on Sunday, February 5, when they travel to North Carolina to take on Wingate. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the Wingate University Tennis Complex.
