Women’s Cross Country Celebrates First Season Back with End of the Year Banquet

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The 2012 season marked the return of the women's cross country team at North Georgia College & State University and to celebrate their accomplishments, head coach Tom Williams held a banquet in their honor on Friday night, Nov. 30.

"I was extremely excited when the announcement came that we were bringing the program back, and we couldn't have had a better first season back in my eyes," said Williams during the banquet. "We set goals for the team as well as individuals this season and we met and surpassed every one of them. Tonight, we placed closure on the 2012 season, but we still left knowing that our goals and expectations will be higher for 2013 and into the future."

Senior Lauren Turner, who was named to the Peach Belt Conference All-Academic Team, kick-started the event with a short speech describing the season from her point of view and thanking the team for a memorable senior campaign.

Following Turner was Coach Williams who talked about the season and goals set. While not all the goals were stated, one that stood out included the PBC preseason standings. The Saints were chosen 11th in the preseason coaches poll, but surprised many with an eighth-place finish in the league championship race.

Along the way, every runner set personal records and some learned that they can do more than they thought and run further than they thought possible.

Numerous awards were handed out including Most Valuable Runner, the Coaches Award and Rookie of the Year. Top runner Emily Beusse took home the MVR while Karley Barcus was awarded the Coaches Award. Meagan Anstette and Emily Roemer rounded out the awards by taking home Co-Rookie of the Year honors.

The Saints have 15 runners eligible to return next season, and all signs point towards higher goals and an even better year for Williams and his corps of runners.
