Women's Cross Country Caps 2013 Season With Strong 7th Place Finish At NCAA Division II Southeast Regional
CHARLOTTE, North Carolina – (UNGAthletics.com) – The University of North Georgia women's cross country team punctuated its 2013 season with top-10 finish at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional on Saturday contested at McAlpin Creek Park. The Nighthawks finished seventh out of 31 teams in the team standings and were led by Maggie Tindol's 11th place finish.
Tindol returned to her form as she ran the 6K course in 22:39 which was good for 11th place out of 211 runners. By virtue of her top-25 finish, the sophomore garnered All-Region honors in a post-race ceremony.
Emily Beusse finished in 39th after recording a 23:33 time while Caitlin Connell and Alyssa Sale crossed the line together at 24:26 which was good for 60th and 61st place. Ashlee Varnson finished 73rd with a 24:40 while Ellie Tanner rounded out the top-five scorers with an 81st place finish (24:52).
South Atlantic Conference Champion Wingate finished in first place in the team competition with a final score of 75 points. They will advance to NCAA Division II Nationals in Spokane, Wash. along with Peach Belt Conference members Flagler and Columbus State who finished second and third respectively.
The individual race was won by Hannah Witt of King as she dominated the race from the start and never relinquished her lead as she finished in a time of 21:46. Cheyenne Thompson of Montevallo captured second place in a time of 22:11. She will advance to the NCAA Division II Nationals along with third place finisher Ashly Sutherland of Converse. Rounding out the individual qualifiers was Jessica Viscusi of Mars Hill who finished the race fifth in a time of 22:20.
