Cross Country Finishes Strong at Furman Invite

Greenville, SC – The North Georgia
College & State University women finished ninth, and the men
took 13th at the 2008 Furman Invitational Cross Country Meet
Saturday morning.
The men got things started at the Furman Golf Course with their 8K
event, as Furman University took home the top prize with 36 points,
edging out Samford University in second place and Marshall
University in third place. The Saints finished 13th with 325 total
points in a field of 150 runners.
Freshman Kyle Ashcroft led the way for the Saints, taking 64th
place with a time of 29:29, while Alan Schmitz finished ten places
later, crossing the line in 74th place in 29:39.
North Georgia would bunch together a trio of runners to round out
their top five as Tyler Mattix, Alex Kenna, and Teale Marchette all
finished in a span of five seconds. Mattix crossed the line in 80th
place in 29:54, Kenna finished 81st in 29:56, and Marchette
followed in 82nd position with a time of 29:59.
The women would follow with their 5K race as Samford University
finished in front, posting 38 points to take home the title. Furman
University followed in second place with 47 points, and the College
of Charleston finished a distant third with 140 points. The Lady
Saints finished inside the top ten, coming in ninth place with 246
points in a field of 140 participants.
Emmy Lawalin led North Georgia once again, finishing in 36th place
with a time of 20:47, while freshman Katie Vance came in 51st place
in 21:19.
Meghan Riggin followed in 61st place in a time of 21:53, while
Crystal Crouch crossed the line in 63rd position, just two seconds
behind Riggin in 21:55. Taylor Hanson rounded out the top five,
finishing in 64th place with a time of 21:56.
Both teams will have a week off before traveling to Milledgeville,
Georgia, on Saturday, October 25, for the 2008 Peach Belt
Conference Championships.
