Lady Saints Place 5th of Nine at JSU Season Opener
OXFORD, AL –
Under perfect running conditions with temperatures in the low 70s
and a light mist in the air, the North Georgia women’s cross
country team opened their season at the annual Jacksonville State
University Struts Season opener, finishing fifth in a field of nine
teams.
Kennesaw Sate University captured the title with a near perfect
score 21 total points, finishing 45 points ahead of their nearest
competitor. Jacksonville State was runner-up with 66 points,
followed by West Georgia with 73, Clayton State with 78, while
North Georgia rounded out the top five schools with 108 total
points.
In the season opener at the city of Oxford Parks and Recreation
the women competed on a two-mile course, the only 3200-meter event
on the 2009 schedule.
Katie Vance began her sophomore campaign, crossing the one-mile
marker in 5:48 before finishing 13th overall with a time of 12:17
to lead the Lady Saints. Freshman Samantha Silvers competed in her
first collegiate race, completing the first half of the course in
6:02 before moving up two spots over the final mile to finish in
12:40, good for 17th place overall.
Becky Dunn also stepped foot on the first college course of her
career and conquered the two-mile race in 13:01, good for third
place on the team and 23rd position overall.
TJ Hansen crossed the line in 25th place overall with a time of
13:08, while Candace Chumley rounded out the top five for the Lady
Saints in 30th place overall with a time of 13:46.
Clare Madrid finished 32nd (13:58), Savannah Bryce finished 40th
(14:16), Corey McIntyre was 41st (14:24), and Sarah Mayorga rounded
out the team in 45th place of the 70 runners in 14:43.
The Lady Saints will go right back to work next weekend, traveling
to the Berry College Invitational on Saturday, September 12, with
the gun set to go off at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Standard Time.
