MOUNT BERRY, GA
– The North Georgia College & State University
women’s cross country team competed in their second race of
the year Saturday morning, finishing 9th in the field of 20 teams
at the 2009 Berry College Invitational.
The Lady Saints posted a total score of 235 to place 9th overall
in the 5000-meter event, while host Berry College ran away with the
event, placing three finishers in the top 10 to win the
invitational with 56 total points. NAIA members Shorter College and
Lee University were second and third with 76 and 89 points
respectively.
Shorter’s Justyna Mudy captured the individual title,
finishing the course in 18:31.26, while Berry’s Courtney
Cooper finished second, and three contestants finished less than
two second apart in the race for third place.
Katie Vance paced North Georgia for the second time in as many
weeks, finishing 18th overall with a time of 20:27.61, less then 10
second off her collegiate best, posted last season at the Mercer
Invitational.
Samantha Silvers followed Vance with a time of 21:04.87, finishing
her first collegiate 5K in 32nd place at a 6:47.2 pace per
mile.
TJ Hanson and Becky Dunn finished third and fourth on the team,
crossing the line in 60th and 68th place with times of 21:51.80,
and 22:02.39 respectively. Candace Chumley rounded out the top five
and scoring for the Lady Saints with a time of 22:18.73, placing
her in 69th place overall.
The Lady Saints return to action Saturday September 19, traveling to the University of Georgia to compete against some of the best teams in the country. The shotgun start is set for 8:00 a.m.
