Lady Saints 15th at NCAA Cross Country Regionals
WINGATE, NC - The
North Georgia College & State University women’s cross
country put a lid on their season Saturday morning, finishing in
15th place in the field of 23 teams at the 2009 NCAA Division II
Southeast Regional Championships hosted by Wingate University.
The Peach Belt Conference continued their domination in the Southeast Region as Columbus State captured the Championship with 68 total points, placing three runners in the top 10 to advance to the NCAA Division II National Championships later this month in Indiana.
Queens University was second in the event, followed by Lees-McRae, GCSU, and Augusta State rounded out the field’s top five after advancing the National Championships just a year ago. North Georgia was 15th overall, posting 345 total points.
Samantha Silvers had her most surprising race of the year, leading the Lady Saints for the third time this season and taking 25 place overall, running the 6,000-meter course in 25:13, one second better then her 6K time from a week ago at the Peach Belt Conference Championships at UNC Pembroke.
Taylor Hansen was second on the team, taking 59th place overall with a time of 26:24, while Katie Vance was 68th overall with a time of 26:37, good for third on the team.
Candace Chumley was fourth on the team, finishing 91st overall with a time of 27:28, and Becky Dunn rounded out the top five for North Georgia, crossing the line in 112th place overall with a time of 28:13.
Head Coach Tom Williams will say goodbye to a trio of seniors off the Lady Saints cross country team as Taylor Hansen, Candace Chumley, and Clare Madrid all ran their final races in a North Georgia uniform.
North Georgia ends the season having placed in the top 10 in six of their seven events, and will look to continue their success during the 2010 season, returning three of their top five runners for next year.
