Lady Saints Take 6th At PBC Championships
LUMBERTON, NC
– The North Georgia women’s cross country team battled
the elements to take 6th place in the field of 11 teams at the 19th
annual Peach Belt Conference Championships presented by GEICO
Saturday morning at Luther Britt Park.
Columbus State continued their reign as the best in the league,
taking the PBC Championship for the fourth straight season, placing
three runners in the top five for 37 total points. GCSU was second
with 87 points, followed by the University of Montevallo in third
with 91 points. North Georgia finished sixth overall, posting 150
total points.
Sophomore Katie Vance made it two straight Peach Belt
All-Conference performances Saturday morning, taking 12th place
overall with a time of 24:21.76. Vance becomes the first North
Georgia cross country athlete to earn all-conference honors in
back-to-back seasons since the institution entered the NCAA in
2005.
Samantha Silvers followed Vance in the race, taking 24th place
overall with a time of 25:14.87, while Taylor Hansen finished the
6000-meter course in 25:44.43, good for 32nd place overall.
Candace Chumley was fourth on the team and 33rd overall, finishing
the championship in 25:49.04, while Clare Madrid took 49th place
with a time of 27:34.59.
Becky Dunn and Savannah Bryce rounded out the field for North
Georgia, taking 51st and 56th places respectively in times of
27:49.45 and 28:14.76.
Naomi Tanui blitzed the 6k course, winning the PBC Individual
Championship in a time of 22:26. Tanui set an early fast pace in
the overcast and humid conditions and had more than a 20-second
lead halfway through before winning at the line by 35 seconds over
teammate Brittany Skiles. Skiles ran 23:01, three second ahead of
Clayton State’s Chelsea Ellis in third.
North Georgia returns to action in two weeks at the NCAA Division
II Southeast Regional Championship on Saturday, November 7. The
event will be hosted by Wingate University for the second straight
year.
