Augusta State enters the 2011 NCAA Tournament as at-large selection after finishing as the Peach Belt Conference Tournament runner-up with a record of 34-18 on the year.
The Jaguars are making their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance, and will look advance to the Super Regional for the first time in school history after going 4-4 in regional play over the last two seasons.
Jessica Thornton leads the offense, as the power hitting third baseman has 12 home runs, 38 runs batted in, and a 409 batting average, while Kristen Jones has a team-leading 12 doubles and 46 runs batted IN to along with her seven home runs.
The Jaguars’ pitching staff is lead by a pair of junior right-handers who have combined for 29 of the team’s 34 wins. Emily Headrick is 16-6 with a 2.20 earned run average, while Heather Hughes is 13-8 with a 2.41 earned run average in 153.2 innings of work.
As the winningest coach in Augusta State softball history, Melissa Mullins is in her 13th season at the helm of the Jaguars and has posted over 350 career wins, including a school-record 40 wins in 2010 where ASU appeared in their third regional in the last four years.
