AUGUSTA ELIMINATES FLYING FLEET WITH 9-0 VICTORY
DAHLONEGA, GA - Augusta State bounced back Saturday afternoon in the NCAA Southeast Regional with a 9-0 victory in five innings over Erskine College at Hill Stadium.
The victory lifted fifth-seeded ASU to 35-19 on the season and set up an ASU-Flagler rematch at 6:30 p.m., tonight. The Flying Fleet, the No. 8 seed and the Conference Carolinas Tournament champion, saw their season come to an end at 24-17-1 overall.
ASU hurlers Heather Hughes (14-8) and Laura Brown combined to allow just one hit, a single by Erskine’s Morgan Purcell in the fourth inning.
The Jags jumped on top right out of the box with seven runs in the top of the first. Three straight infield singles put ASU in business. Junior shortstop Kacee Camp reached on a fielder’s choice and drove in a run, then stole second before Hughes slapped a two-run double to right-center.
Macy Terry delivered an RBI-single
up the middle before Laura Brown doubled to left to drive in a run.
Destiny Echols singled back thru the middle to plate Brown and give
the Jags a 7-0 advantage.
ASU tacked on single runs in the second and fifth innings on an RBI-single from Kristen Jones and a run-scoring single from Terry in the fourth.
Erskine starter Heather Richey didn’t make it out of the first inning, only registering two outs in the first while allowing seven hits and seven runs. Kelsey Spurrier worked the last 4.1 innings of the game, giving up six hits and two earned runs with a pair of strikeouts and three walks.
Echols led the ASU offensive assault with a 3-for-4 effort, while Jones, Camp, Hughes and Terry each added a pair of safeties. The Jags combined for 13 hits.
