As one of the hottest teams in the Southeast Region, Columbus State might be the strongest No. 5 seed in the country. The Cougars have won seven straight games and 12 of their past 13 overall. They have taken down the likes of region No. 1-seed North Georgia, region No. 2-seed Armstrong and region No. 7-seed Flagler.

They were the No. 9-ranked team in the Southeast Region on the outside looking in last week, and have since jumped all the way to No. 5 and are now one of the most dangerous teams in this region. The Cougars were also receiving votes in the latest NFCA Top 25 poll.

It has been the power numbers for CSU that have been the Achilles heel this season, but have since got dominating numbers from senior pitcher Mollie Russell. The Cougars have hit 68 home runs this year, by far the most in the region. Even better yet, Russell has not allowed an earned run in her past 42 innings, throwing six complete games and going a perfect 6-0.

Ranking second in the PBC in team batting average and second in the region in team ERA, Columbus State has the makeup of a team for a deep run. It’s been four years since CSU has last made a regional, and playing away from Cougar Field has been a problem for this squad in 2012. They only went 10-9 away from Columbus, and to make a trip to the CWS they will have to win away from home.
